DUI driver arrested after crash near Highway 78 leaves four people seriously injured

Pueblo, CO – The Pueblo Police Department arrested a suspected impaired driver following a serious traffic crash late May 21 that left four people injured.

According to police, officers were dispatched around 11:20 p.m. to the area of Hog Farm Road and West State Highway 78 after receiving reports of a traffic accident.

When officers arrived, they found a Jeep with extensive damage off the south side of the roadway. Police said all four occupants inside the Jeep suffered serious injuries.

Two of the occupants were ejected during the crash, while the driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire and rescue crews.

All four occupants were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Officers also located a Ram pickup truck about 100 yards away from the crash scene and made contact with the driver, identified as 54-year-old Jose Rojas-Fernandez. According to police, Rojas-Fernandez appeared to be intoxicated at the scene.

Police said the suspect was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance and DUI processing before later being booked into the Pueblo County Jail.

Rojas-Fernandez faces charges including driving under the influence, vehicular assault, careless driving causing serious bodily injury, and prohibited use of a weapon.
