Tejon Street Revitalization Project Underway in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs, CO – The City of Colorado Springs is set to begin the much-anticipated Tejon Street Revitalization Project on Monday, March 24. The project aims to enhance the downtown area’s accessibility for pedestrians and improve navigation for delivery vehicles. The initial phase of the project will close a section of North Tejon Street between Colorado Avenue and Pikes Peak Avenue, with work expected to continue through June.

Road Closures and Detours

Beginning Monday, North Tejon Street will be closed to vehicles between Colorado Avenue and Pikes Peak Avenue. This closure will last until June when Block 1 of the project is expected to be completed. For drivers heading northbound on Tejon Street, the City has outlined a detour route:

  • Turn left onto East Colorado Avenue

  • Turn right onto South Cascade Avenue

  • Turn right onto East Pikes Peak Avenue

  • Finally, turn left back onto North Tejon Street

The City has also issued a detailed detour map to help drivers navigate around the area.

Temporary Restrictions and Parking Updates

On Tuesday, March 25, crews will begin tree removal along Tejon Street, and parking will be temporarily restricted. Northbound Tejon Street will be closed to vehicles, including street parking, between Colorado Avenue and Pikes Peak Avenue. Left and right turns from Colorado Avenue onto northbound Tejon Street will also be closed.

For public transportation, Mountain Metro’s ZEB Route will detour, and the bus stop located on Tejon Street at Colorado Avenue will be temporarily removed. However, southbound Tejon Street will remain open for vehicle traffic during this phase of construction.

In terms of parking, no parking will be permitted on Block 1 during construction for safety reasons. However, City parking garages remain open, with rates set at $1 per hour, and free parking is available on Sundays. Local businesses impacted by the construction will also provide limited vouchers for two hours of free parking in City garages.

Future Phases of Construction

Once Block 1 is completed in June, the project will move to Block 2, which spans from Pikes Peak Avenue to Kiowa Street. The City’s long-term goal is to make Tejon Street a more pedestrian-friendly space, while also facilitating better access for service vehicles.

While the Tejon Street Revitalization Project may cause some temporary disruptions, it is expected to bring lasting improvements to the downtown area. The City encourages residents and visitors to stay informed of ongoing closures and detours to ensure safe and efficient travel throughout the area during construction.
