ROCKY FORD, Colo. — An off-duty volunteer firefighter with the Rocky Ford Fire Department was seriously injured early Sunday morning after a privately owned vehicle he was driving crashed into two police cars outside the Rocky Ford Police Department headquarters.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on South 9th Street, between Walnut Avenue and the railroad tracks, according to a statement from the Rocky Ford Police Department.
Authorities say the firefighter, whose identity has not been released, exited the moving vehicle for reasons that remain under investigation. The unmanned vehicle continued down the road and struck a police car parked outside the station. The impact pushed the first vehicle into a second police car, resulting in damage to both.
Emergency responders transported the firefighter to Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta. From there, the individual was airlifted to a trauma center. As of Monday morning, the firefighter’s condition had not been made public.
The Colorado State Patrol and the Otero County Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating the incident. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that alcohol is being considered as a potential factor in the crash.
No other injuries were reported.
