Pueblo, CO – Approximately 35 volunteers from across Pueblo came together Wednesday, September 9, to help improve homes in the city’s Bessemer and Eastside neighborhoods as part of the second annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program.
The City of Pueblo’s Housing and Citizen Services Department organized the volunteer effort in partnership with Baha Construction. Two volunteer teams worked on the homes of two income-qualifying families, applying fresh exterior paint to help improve the appearance and condition of the properties.
The city said the work is especially important in neighborhoods where many homes are more than five decades old and increasingly require rehabilitation. Deteriorating siding and peeling paint can allow moisture to enter a home, potentially contributing to wood rot, mold growth, structural deterioration and more expensive repairs over time.
By addressing those issues through relatively simple exterior improvements, the volunteer program aims to help families maintain their homes while improving neighborhood conditions.
The city credited several community partners for helping make this year’s project possible. Mayor Heather Graham provided contingency funding, while Pine & Maintenance Landscaping sponsored the effort. Baha Construction provided project oversight and worked alongside the volunteers.
The Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program brings together community members and local organizations to make improvements that can have a lasting impact on participating families and the surrounding neighborhoods.
The city thanked the volunteers, sponsors and partners who contributed their time, funding and expertise to the second annual event.
