Manitou Springs, Colo. — The Manitou Springs Fire Department (MSFD) has introduced a new initiative aimed at bolstering wildfire prevention efforts in the community. Thanks to a generous donation from the Manitou Springs Community Foundation, the department is offering homeowners the opportunity to receive up to $500 in matching funds to help mitigate wildfire risks around their properties.
The Resident Wildfire Mitigation Grant Match Program encourages residents to take proactive steps in reducing the threat of wildfires by removing hazardous vegetation and creating defensible space around their homes. This grant is a response to the growing concern over wildfire risk, particularly in areas like Manitou Springs, which is located in what is known as a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). In these areas, human development and wildland vegetation are often intermingled, making them particularly vulnerable to wildfires.
Michael Willie, Lieutenant and Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator for the MSFD, emphasized the importance of such efforts in safeguarding lives and property. “Mitigation is one of the most effective tools in protecting lives and property from wildfires,” said Willie. “This program empowers residents to take meaningful action before the fire season intensifies.”
The MSFD’s approach follows standard wildfire mitigation practices, advising homeowners to establish a defensible space within 30 feet of their structures. This involves removing dead vegetation, trimming trees, and creating buffers that can help slow or stop the spread of fire.
Homeowners wishing to participate in the program must follow a structured application process. They must first select a licensed and insured tree company, ensuring that contractors carry general liability insurance of at least $1 million and workers’ compensation coverage of at least $100,000. A pre-work walkthrough with an MSFD representative is required, and residents must sign a stewardship agreement and an official Wildfire Mitigation Cost-Share Agreement outlining the scope of work.
Once the work is completed, the tree company will invoice both the homeowner and MSFD separately based on the agreed-upon match amount. Homeowners are advised not to pay the full amount upfront, as reimbursements are only provided based on the matching grant.
The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and funds are limited, so residents are encouraged to act quickly. For those unsure about whether their property needs mitigation, the MSFD offers assistance in evaluating properties and providing recommendations.
As wildfire season approaches, this program offers a timely opportunity for Manitou Springs residents to take preventative measures. For more information or to begin the application process, homeowners can visit the MSFD website.
