Colorado Springs Airport to Launch First International Flight to Cancún

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is preparing to take a significant step forward in its expansion, with its first international flight set to depart on June 7, bound for Cancún, Mexico. This marks a major milestone for the airport, as it transitions from primarily domestic flights to offering international travel options.

To accommodate the new international services, the airport has unveiled a state-of-the-art U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, designed to streamline the screening process for incoming passengers. The $8.4 million facility, which was funded entirely through grants and private investments, will not require any taxpayer dollars.

“This is a huge step forward for us,” said Alex Kovacs, Acting Director of Aviation at Colorado Springs Airport. “Currently, we have one single international flight on each Saturday, operated by Southwest Airlines. But our goal is to grow this facility and expand international offerings. The new customs facility has the capacity to process 200 passengers per hour, and we are actively working to increase our flight options as soon as possible.”

The new direct flight to Cancún will operate through the summer, with plans to resume in November and December. Officials are optimistic that the service will help bring more travelers to Colorado Springs, boosting both tourism and business in the region.

Kovacs added, “With the addition of this flight, we anticipate a positive impact on both the local economy and the airport’s overall growth. We see this as the beginning of something much larger, and we’re excited to be part of a growing travel hub in the region.”

As Colorado Springs continues to invest in its infrastructure and expand its travel options, the international flight to Cancún is seen as just the first of many new routes to come. With an eye on increased capacity and future growth, the airport is setting its sights on becoming a key player in the regional travel market.
