El Paso County, CO – The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office is alerting residents to an ongoing scam involving fraudulent text messages that appear to come from ExpressToll, the region’s tolling service. Several customers have reported receiving messages claiming they have an unpaid toll balance and directing them to click a link to make a payment.
The county has confirmed that these messages are not legitimate, urging recipients to ignore the requests. The fraudulent texts often originate from foreign phone numbers and include links that may attempt to steal personal and financial information.
County officials have outlined the steps residents should take if they receive one of these suspicious messages:
- Do not click any links or respond to the message.
- Report the message as spam and block the sender.
- Verify toll balances directly by visiting the official ExpressToll website or by calling their customer service line at (303) 537-3470.
The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office emphasized that official toll agencies, including ExpressToll, will never send unsolicited text messages requesting payment.
“This type of scam is a reminder for residents to stay alert and cautious when receiving unsolicited messages,” said a spokesperson for the county. “If in doubt, always contact the toll agency directly through their verified communication channels.”
Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity to help prevent further scams.
