Colorado Springs, CO — A tragic shooting incident in Colorado Springs on Friday, February 28, has led to the death of a 24-year-old active-duty service member stationed at Fort Carson. Sergeant Shahid Burke was fatally wounded, and the El Paso County Coroner’s Office has confirmed his death is being investigated as a homicide.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded to a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. on North Academy Boulevard, where they found evidence of a shooting. However, there was no immediate sign of a victim at the scene. Hours later, authorities were notified of a shooting victim at a local hospital, where Sgt. Burke was later identified. Shahid Burke. His loss will be felt across the brigade. Our hearts are with Burke’s family and all who knew him during this difficult time. We are committed to supporting our Soldiers struggling with this sudden and tragic loss,” Col. Keller said in a statement.
As of now, CSPD has not publicly disclosed any details regarding suspects or motives in the case. This marks the 11th homicide in Colorado Springs so far this year, an increase from the six homicides recorded at the same time in 2024.
