Drug Bust in Eagle County Leads to Arrest of 26-Year-Old Man

Eagle County, Colo. – A routine traffic stop on I-70 near Breckenridge led to the discovery of a significant drug cache, including over 31 pounds of cocaine and $25,000 in cash, authorities said Tuesday. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office reported that an ununiformed deputy, part of the Gore Range Narcotic Interdiction Team Task Force (GRANITE), pulled over a pickup truck after it allegedly violated several traffic laws.

Upon making contact with the driver, later identified as 26-year-old Francisco Leon, deputies observed two children in the vehicle, one of whom was not wearing a seatbelt. The sheriff’s office stated that a trained K-9 unit was used during the stop, which ultimately led to the discovery of the illicit substances and the large sum of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug transactions.

Leon, a resident of the area, was taken into custody and is facing several serious charges. According to authorities, the charges include unlawful distribution and possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy, special offender status, and child abuse. The cocaine found in the vehicle also showed potential traces of fentanyl, which has raised concerns about the additional dangers posed by the drug.

“We are incredibly proud of our G.R.A.N.I.T.E. Task Force and their unwavering dedication to protecting Eagle County from the dangers of narcotics,” said the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office in a statement. “Their vigilance, expertise, and teamwork play a critical role in disrupting the flow of illicit drugs, ensuring our community remains a safe place for all.”

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the case and encourages anyone with information about the suspect or the crime to contact them at 970-328-8500. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Eagle County Crime Stoppers.

This arrest is another example of the task force’s commitment to keeping drugs off the streets and maintaining public safety in Eagle County.
