Mayor Yemi Mobolade Reflects on Black History Month and the Influence of Past Leaders in His Rise to Office

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — In a recent interview with 11 News, Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade discussed the significance of Black History Month, reflecting on the struggles and progress of Black Americans and how their efforts paved the way for his historic election.

As the first elected Black mayor of Colorado Springs, Mobolade expressed deep gratitude for the trailblazers who made his position possible, emphasizing the lasting impact of leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others who fought for civil rights and equality.

“In celebrating Black history, we’re also acknowledging that we have made a lot of progress,” Mobolade said. “To say we haven’t made any progress is a slap in the face to generations of leaders before us who did so much, including Dr. King, to make it possible for leaders like me to be in office. In 1960, Mayor Yemi would’ve never existed.”

Mobolade, who made history as Colorado Springs’ first Black elected mayor in 2023, also spoke about the role of mentorship in his journey. While he had minimal interaction with former Denver Mayor Michael Hancock during his tenure, Mobolade revealed that Hancock has become a friend and mentor, offering support and guidance after leaving office.

“I had very little interaction with Mayor Hancock while he was in office, but I’ve had a lot more interaction with him post-office. He’s become a friend and, in many ways, a mentor. He’s done a great job at helping to pave the way for me to succeed,” Mobolade shared.

The mayor’s personal story is one of overcoming adversity. Born in West Africa, Mobolade faced his own challenges growing up, including struggles with mental health. He recalled being a shy, uncertain young man who struggled to find his path in life.

“If a shy and lost kid, a late bloomer kid from West Africa who struggled with mental health and had suicidal thoughts, who didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life… If I can do it, so can you,” he said. “It’s an incredible privilege, honor, and responsibility that I feel for the next generation of minority youth.”

Mayor Mobolade’s journey to the mayor’s office serves as an inspiration to young people, particularly those from minority backgrounds, showing that despite the odds, it’s possible to rise to positions of leadership and influence. His words offer a reminder of the progress made, while also recognizing the work that still lies ahead in inspiring future generations to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Mobolade’s message is clear: the legacy of past Black leaders is not only a source of pride but also a motivating force for those who follow. As he continues to serve his city, the mayor hopes to be a beacon of possibility for those who may one day take up the mantle of leadership themselves.
