Colorado Springs, Colo. — An officer-involved shooting on Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of one individual, according to Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
Police responded to a call about a family disturbance in the 3100 block of Illinois Avenue just before 5 p.m. The location is near Edison Elementary School, in the vicinity of Hancock Avenue and Fillmore Street.
Before officers arrived at the scene, two people involved in the disturbance left the residence, leaving one person behind with an armed suspect. All individuals involved in the incident were reportedly members of the same family.
CSPD spokesperson Ira Cronin explained that officers began making safety arrangements to contact the person still inside the home, as concerns for their safety were heightened. When officers made contact with the individual, the suspect was still armed.
“The suspect did not follow officers’ verbal commands to drop the weapon and instead raised the gun toward officers,” Cronin said in a statement. “In response, two officers fired at least one shot, striking the suspect.”
Despite efforts to provide immediate medical aid, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Sunday morning, the identity of the deceased has not been released.
Fortunately, no officers were injured in the encounter. All individuals involved in the incident have been accounted for.
In accordance with department policy, the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
CSPD officials confirmed that body camera footage of the incident will be released, along with a detailed report, within the next three weeks, as required by department policy.
This marks the second officer-involved shooting in Colorado Springs this year, prompting renewed discussions about police response protocols and safety measures in domestic disturbance situations.
