Trail Reroute Project Underway at Palmer Red Rock Loop in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The City of Colorado Springs has launched a trail reroute project at the Palmer Red Rock Loop, located at the Section 16 Trailhead in Bear Creek Cañon Park. The work began on Sunday, May 4, and will focus on constructing a 400-foot sustainable trail to replace deteriorating steps along the popular trail.

The Palmer Red Rock Loop Trail, which is connected to the Red Rock Canyon Open Space, is known for attracting hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts. However, the existing steps have been gradually eroding over time, prompting the need for an updated, more durable solution.

According to city officials, the reroute work will be conducted off the main trail, so there will be no closures. However, hikers are urged to stay clear of the designated work zones to ensure their safety as crews complete the project.

Dan Allen, Colorado Springs Parks Trail Project Specialist, expressed enthusiasm for the reroute, saying, “We are excited to construct this trail reroute where we have the opportunity to not only enhance the trail system but provide education on proper trail construction and restoration to emerging trail leaders. This new trail will provide a safer, more sustainable option for all users.”

The project is part of the annual Pikes Peak Regional Crew Leader Training, which brings together various organizations, including the El Paso County Parks & Community Services Department, City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services, the Rocky Mountain Field Institute, and the Trails and Open Space Coalition. The training aims to teach future trail leaders important skills in sustainable trail building and restoration.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of June, at which point the new trail section will provide an improved, more durable path for the many outdoor enthusiasts who frequent the area.

As the city moves forward with this important improvement, local residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park responsibly and respect the ongoing construction efforts.
