Snow Removal Companies Face Growing Threat of Equipment Theft in Denver

DENVER, CO — Snow removal companies in Colorado are grappling with a disturbing trend: an increase in equipment theft that threatens both their operations and client safety. According to industry experts, thieves are targeting valuable machinery, including trucks, trailers, skid steers, power tools, and more — all of which are essential for clearing snow during the harsh winter months.

Kim Jewel, a representative from Snow Management Services, shared insights on the alarming rise in thefts, particularly within the snow management sector. Partnering with the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado, Jewel spoke with Scripps News Denver about the growing concerns facing businesses in the industry.

“These thieves are relentless. They’re after anything they can resell or repurpose, and the fact that these crimes are happening year-round makes it even harder for us to safeguard our operations,” Jewel said.

For snow removal businesses, the theft of high-value equipment presents unique challenges. To ensure quick responses during winter storms, companies often stage their equipment on client properties. This makes them especially vulnerable to thieves who know exactly where to find valuable tools.

Jewel explained that criminals are using advanced tactics to carry out these thefts. “Some thieves are now using drones to scout properties, identifying unsecured equipment and mapping out vulnerabilities,” she said. “Others are more familiar with the industry, often using insider knowledge to bypass security systems, cut locks, remove trailer doors, and disable GPS trackers.”

The theft of snow removal equipment, which can occur at any time of day, is not only an economic blow to companies but also creates safety risks for residents who rely on timely snow clearance. “We can’t afford to have our equipment stolen, especially when storms hit suddenly and we need to be ready to go at a moment’s notice,” Jewel added.

Authorities are encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity, as thefts tend to occur more frequently at night but can happen at any time. Jewel’s advice to other snow removal businesses and the general public is clear: “If you see something, say something. These criminals can be very resourceful, but the more eyes we have out there, the better chance we have of catching them.”

As snow removal companies face both the unpredictable nature of winter weather and the threat of theft, vigilance and proactive security measures are now essential. Industry leaders are calling for greater collaboration with law enforcement and increased awareness about the severity of equipment theft in the region. Without immediate action, these thefts will continue to undermine the operations of snow management companies and disrupt services that are crucial to the safety of Colorado’s residents.
