Pueblo Street Crews Work to Repair Potholes After Winter Weather

Pueblo, CO – Pueblo’s public works crews are hard at work addressing the aftermath of recent winter storms, which have caused significant damage to city streets. Since Saturday, Pueblo Public Works reports that street teams have been called to 17 different locations around the city, filling more than 100 potholes created by the freeze-thaw cycle.

The freeze-thaw process, which happens when temperatures fluctuate, causes water in cracks in the pavement to freeze and expand, leading to the creation of potholes. The recent weather conditions, including snow followed by warmer temperatures, have intensified this issue, making it challenging to maintain the streets.

However, the recent break in the cold weather has given crews a much-needed opportunity to catch up on the repairs. Andrew Hayes, a representative from Pueblo Public Works, explained that while snow removal is a priority during storms, crews shift focus to pothole repairs once the snow melts. “Obviously, when the snow is falling, we’re out there pushing snow around, and immediately after the snow stops and melts away, then we’re out there patching,” Hayes said. “Having some nice warm weather makes it easier to get out there and get that work done.”

The milder temperatures this week have allowed crews to get a head start on repairs, easing some of the strain caused by the ongoing winter weather. As spring approaches, city officials continue to monitor road conditions, ensuring that necessary repairs are made to keep streets safe for drivers and pedestrians alike.
