PUEBLO, CO — A 44-year-old Pueblo West man, identified as Andrew Cvevas, has died while in police custody following a suspected DUI crash over the weekend. According to the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office, Cvevas became unresponsive while being transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead at the emergency room.
The Pueblo Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Cvevas’ death.
Wrong-Way Driver Leads to Crash
The incident unfolded late Saturday night when police received reports of a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 25 near Highway 50. Officers responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. and later traced the vehicle to a crash site at the intersection of Dillon Drive and Highway 47/Cesar Chavez Boulevard.
Witnesses at the scene indicated that the wrong-way driver, later identified as Cvevas, was speeding north on Dillon Drive before running a red light and colliding with a white BMW. The driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Attempted Escape and Detainment
Following the crash, Cvevas allegedly attempted to flee the scene by stealing another vehicle. He reportedly tried to force the driver out of the car before being stopped by an off-duty deputy from Douglas County. The deputy, who was at the scene when the incident occurred, detained Cvevas until Pueblo police arrived shortly before 11:40 p.m. The deputy sustained minor injuries during the altercation and was treated at the scene.
Cvevas was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs (DUI) and aggravated robbery.
In-Custody Death Under Investigation
While being transported to the hospital, Cvevas became unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel attempted to provide aid, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The cause of death has not yet been officially determined, and the Pueblo Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death while in custody.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to gather further details about the events that led to Cvevas’ fatal incident.
