CUSTER COUNTY, CO – More than 80 at-risk animals were seized on Monday after a coordinated rescue operation led by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, following a citizen complaint received earlier this month.
The investigation began on February 13, when a concerned citizen alerted authorities about the conditions at a large commercial kennel operating under a special use permit issued by the Custer County government. After reviewing the complaint, a judge found probable cause, leading to the issuance of a search warrant.
On Monday, deputies, along with an evidence technician, executed the search warrant at the facility. The operation was a collaborative effort, involving several agencies and professionals, including the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), the CDA Division of Animal Welfare, two veterinarians, a veterinary technician, the National Dog Mill Rescue, the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Park County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control, and other local and federal agencies.
During the search, a total of 77 dogs, two horses, one donkey, three hens, and three cats were removed from the property. All the animals were transported to regional care facilities to receive necessary medical attention.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the animals are not yet available for adoption as they require significant care and treatment. Authorities are working closely with veterinarians to assess the condition of each animal and ensure their recovery.
While the investigation is ongoing, no charges have been filed against the owners of the kennel at this time. The sheriff’s office has not disclosed the names of the individuals involved, as the case is still under investigation. The findings have been presented to the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for further review.
Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that the animals receive proper care and that the investigation proceeds with the appropriate legal steps.
