WALSENBURG, Colo. — Six individuals and a Walsenburg police officer were hospitalized following a high-speed pursuit that ended in a head-on collision Monday evening, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on northbound Interstate 25 near the Walsenburg and Alamosa exit. Authorities say the pursuit began after a CSP trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle that failed to pull over.
The Walsenburg Police Department then joined the pursuit. During the chase, the driver crossed the median on I-25, colliding head-on with an SUV traveling southbound.
The crash resulted in serious injuries to two occupants of the pursued vehicle, both of whom were transported to the hospital. Four occupants of the SUV sustained minor to moderate injuries and were also taken to medical facilities.
In addition, a Walsenburg police officer involved in the pursuit was hospitalized but is expected to recover, according to CSP. The identities of those involved have not been released.
The incident remains under investigation.
