COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A significant construction project is set to begin later this month on 8th Street between Highway 24 and Motor City Way. The project, which is aimed at addressing aging infrastructure, will impact daily commuters in the area, where more than 30,000 vehicles travel each day.
One of the key components of the project will be the replacement of the bridge over Fountain Creek. In addition to the bridge replacement, the project will also work to merge the existing vehicle bridge with the adjacent pedestrian bridge. This change is expected to improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety along this busy stretch of road.
Ryan Phipps, Capital Improvements Manager for the City of Colorado Springs, explained the scope of the project, emphasizing the widening of the bridge to accommodate three northbound lanes. “This project is going to widen the existing bridge to allow two full northbound lanes to go all the way up and cross Highway 24,” Phipps said. “It will also include that right turn lane. So, we’ll go from two to three lanes in the northbound direction.”
The city’s Department of Transportation and local contractors are working diligently to complete the project by the summer of 2026, ensuring that the infrastructure is updated and able to handle the high volume of traffic that regularly travels through this critical corridor. With the planned improvements, city officials anticipate reduced congestion at the intersection of 8th Street and Highway 24, particularly during peak travel times.
As construction progresses, drivers and pedestrians can expect temporary disruptions, but officials are hopeful that the long-term benefits will significantly improve traffic conditions and overall safety in the area. The city is urging residents and commuters to stay informed about updates to the project timeline and traffic advisories in the coming months.
