Driver Identified in Fatal North Academy Boulevard Crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Authorities have identified the man who died following a two-vehicle crash earlier this month along North Academy Boulevard. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office confirmed the victim as 49-year-old Brent Nicklas.

The crash occurred on May 14 and involved two vehicles at the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and East Boulder Street. According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, one vehicle was traveling southbound in the left through lane of North Academy when another vehicle attempted to make a left turn from East Boulder Street. The southbound vehicle struck the driver’s side of the turning car, causing significant damage.

Nicklas, who was driving one of the vehicles, sustained critical injuries and later died at the hospital. He was traveling with a passenger at the time of the crash. The passenger was also transported to a nearby hospital; their condition remains unknown.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision. They have not released information about potential citations or contributing factors such as speed or impairment.

The incident marks the 13th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs so far in 2025. By comparison, police reported 19 traffic deaths by the same time last year, indicating a decrease in fatal accidents year over year.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Traffic Division.
