Downtown Colorado Springs Road Closure Begins as Palmer High School Renovation Kicks Off

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Commuters traveling through downtown Colorado Springs will face a significant new road closure starting today, as Boulder Street is now closed between Nevada Avenue and Weber Street. The closure marks the beginning of a multi-year construction project aimed at transforming William J. Palmer High School.

City officials confirmed that the closure, which is expected to last approximately two and a half years, will remain in place until January 2028. The project supports a $100 million renovation of Palmer High School, one of the city’s most historic educational institutions.

The temporary closure will facilitate the staging and movement of heavy construction equipment and materials. It also allows for a secure access route for construction vehicles, ensuring the safety of both workers and the public during the renovation process.

“This is a major step in modernizing Palmer High School and preparing the campus for the next generation of students,” a city spokesperson said. “While the closure will certainly impact traffic in the area, it’s a necessary part of making sure the work proceeds safely and efficiently.”

The roadwork is part of a broader initiative across the school district to upgrade aging facilities and create safer, more advanced learning environments. Renovations at Palmer High School will include structural updates, modern classroom spaces, improved accessibility, and enhanced safety features.

Despite the disruption, officials emphasize that the closure is temporary. Any permanent changes to city roadways would require formal approval by the Colorado Springs City Council, along with opportunities for community input.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to plan alternate routes, expect delays, and allow for additional travel time when navigating the downtown area. Updates regarding traffic and construction progress are expected to be shared periodically by both the city and the school district.
