Crash Involving Two Semitrucks Shuts Down I-25 in Weld County for Hours

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A major crash involving two semitrucks early Thursday morning shut down both directions of Interstate 25 between Berthoud and Mead, causing significant traffic disruptions and prompting a hazardous materials response.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:16 a.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). Investigators said a southbound semitruck hauling office supplies, including Sterno fuel cans, drifted off the right side of the road and struck a barrier. The vehicle then crossed into the northbound lanes, colliding with another semitruck carrying gasoline.

Following the collision, the first semitruck rolled onto its side beneath the overpass for Weld County Road, completely blocking traffic in both directions. CSP’s Hazmat Unit responded to assist with the cleanup due to the potential danger from the cargo.

One of the drivers sustained minor injuries but declined transportation to the hospital, CSP confirmed.

The crash led to extensive delays for morning commuters. Authorities said approximately 100 to 200 vehicles were stuck in the northbound backup between Highway 119 and Highway 66. It took around 1.5 hours to fully clear those vehicles from the area.

In addition to clearing the wreckage, engineers were called in to inspect the overpass above the crash site to ensure the bridge remained structurally sound. Officials said drivers should expect an extended closure while the inspection and cleanup efforts continue.

CSP and other agencies advised drivers not already caught in the traffic to avoid the area and use alternate routes, such as U.S. Route 287, to bypass the closure.

No estimated time of reopening had been provided as of Thursday morning.
