Colorado Springs Utilities Proposes Natural Gas Rate Increase Amid Rising Market Costs

Colorado Springs, CO – Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) is set to propose an increase in natural gas fuel rates during the upcoming Utilities Board meeting on Wednesday. The proposed increase comes in response to rising market costs for natural gas, particularly following the winter season.

If the Utilities Board approves the proposal, it will be presented to the Colorado Springs City Council for final approval at their meeting on March 25. Should the council give the green light, the new rates are scheduled to take effect on April 1.

According to CSU, the impact of the proposed rate increase will vary depending on several factors, including weather conditions, household usage, and the efficiency of individual homes. However, CSU estimates that the average residential customer will see an increase of approximately $6.50 per month on their natural gas bills.

Natural gas prices are subject to quarterly fluctuations based on market conditions, and CSU has indicated that the rising costs of natural gas have been particularly noticeable as the region transitions into the spring months. The rate adjustment will affect fuel costs but will not include any changes to electric rates this quarter.

This proposed rate change marks the first adjustment to natural gas fuel rates since October 2024, when the last change was implemented.
