Colorado Springs Police Officer Involved in Shooting After Suspect Points Gun at Officers

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — A Colorado Springs man has been identified after an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday evening, which occurred when the suspect allegedly pointed a handgun at police officers. The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Avery Denton, has been arrested and is facing a menacing charge.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Denton was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the El Paso County Jail on a $2,000 bond. The officers involved in the shooting were not injured, and the suspect was unharmed.

The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 p.m. at an apartment complex along Delta Drive, following a call reporting a road rage incident involving a firearm. Officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact with the suspect. Upon opening the door to his apartment, Denton allegedly confronted the officers while holding a raised handgun, pointing it toward them.

In response to the threat, at least one officer discharged a firearm, though no one was struck or injured by the shot. Denton was subsequently arrested without further escalation.

As is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.

CSPD has announced that a significant event briefing will take place in 21 days, during which the body camera footage from the incident will be released to the public, in accordance with department policy.

This investigation is ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.
