Colorado Springs Police Department Issues Accident Alert Amid Winter Weather

Colorado Springs, Colo. – The Colorado Springs Police Department has activated Accident Alert status due to hazardous winter weather conditions affecting the area. The status was put into place on Tuesday, as officials anticipated a significant increase in motor vehicle crashes, making it difficult for officers to respond to all incidents promptly.

Under Accident Alert status, the police will only respond to accidents that meet specific criteria. These include incidents where vehicles are undrivable due to damage, accidents involving fatalities or injuries requiring medical attention, collisions involving alcohol or drugs, alleged hit-and-run situations, or crashes resulting in damage to public property, excluding wildlife.

Motorists involved in less severe accidents are encouraged to report the crash to authorities within 72 hours. The police department advises that only critical incidents should be reported to emergency services during this period in order to ensure the efficient allocation of resources.

As winter weather continues to impact travel, the police department reminds drivers to exercise caution on the roads. Officials recommend allowing extra time for travel and to stay prepared for potentially icy and slick conditions.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed on road conditions and to follow all safety protocols while navigating the city during this challenging weather event.
