Colorado Springs, CO – A 35-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges after a suspicious incident at a fast food restaurant in the 1200 block of North Academy Boulevard on Sunday morning, April 13. The incident prompted a swift response from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) after employees raised concerns about a man and a young girl inside the establishment.
According to the CSPD, the situation unfolded around 10:06 a.m. when an employee alerted authorities about a potential child abduction. The employee reported that the man, later identified as Darryl McLaurin, was accompanied by a young girl but was not the child’s parent or legal guardian. Officers arrived at the scene and quickly confirmed the child was not related to McLaurin.
Further investigation revealed that the girl had been enticed away from an apartment courtyard prior to the incident. The child was safely returned to her parents without any physical harm.
McLaurin was taken into custody and booked on several charges, including second-degree kidnapping, enticement of a child, failure to register as a sex offender, and other unspecified charges. Authorities noted that McLaurin had outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
In a statement, the CSPD praised the community for its vigilance in helping prevent what could have been a much more dangerous situation. “We are grateful for the prompt action taken by the employees at the restaurant and the quick response of our officers,” said a police spokesperson. “Thanks to the cooperation of the public, the young girl was safely returned to her family.”
The police department has urged anyone with additional information related to the case to contact them at (719) 444-7000. The investigation is ongoing.
As of now, McLaurin remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
