COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The Colorado Springs City Council approved an increase in gas rates for customers of Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) during a meeting on Tuesday. The decision will result in an average increase of approximately $7 per month for residential utility bills, with the rate hike set to take effect next week.
CSU officials cited a significant rise in natural gas consumption this winter, driven by colder-than-expected temperatures, as the primary reason for the adjustment. The utility company stated that the increase in rates is necessary to offset the higher costs of providing gas service during the prolonged cold spell.
Despite the rate increase, CSU assured customers that their electric rates would remain unaffected by the change. The utility company emphasized that the gas rate adjustment was required to maintain the reliability of the natural gas supply and to ensure service continuity during peak demand periods.
The decision comes at a time when many residents are still feeling the financial strain from the winter months. While the increase is expected to be modest for individual customers, the impact could be significant for those on fixed incomes or larger households.
CSU has encouraged customers to review their bills and explore energy efficiency programs to help manage the cost of natural gas service.
