Colorado Schools Recognized for Supporting Military Families

Pueblo, CO – On Thursday, an event held at the Colorado State Capitol honored 27 schools across the state for their outstanding efforts in supporting military students and their families. These schools, which have earned the prestigious Purple Star designation, are being recognized for their exceptional commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by military families, including frequent moves, parental deployments, and the difficulties of adjusting to new schools.

The Purple Star designation is awarded to schools that demonstrate a deep commitment to supporting military students, ensuring they receive the resources, understanding, and guidance needed to succeed academically and emotionally. This recognition highlights schools that go beyond the standard curriculum to foster a supportive environment for military families, who often face the complexities of relocation and extended family separations.

Out of the nine districts recognized statewide, seven are located in El Paso County, a region with a strong military presence. Among these, the Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, which includes Mountainside Elementary School, stands out for its community-driven efforts to support military students. The school’s Kindness Club created a special support ribbon featuring the name of every student. This ribbon symbolizes unity and gratitude for the sacrifices made by military families, and it’s a testament to the school’s dedication to fostering a caring, inclusive environment.

In addition to the ribbon project, Abrams Elementary School, also in El Paso County, held a Heroes Lunch to commemorate Military Child Month. The event brought together military families, offering an opportunity to honor and show appreciation for those who have served or are currently serving in the military.

The recognition extends beyond just one district. In Widefield School District 3, both Widefield High School and Grand Mountain School earned the Purple Star designation for their commitment to supporting military-connected students. These schools, along with several others in the region, continue to set an example of how communities can come together to make a difference in the lives of military families.

Additionally, schools in Colorado Springs School District 11 received the Purple Star designation, including Jenkins Middle School, McAuliffe Elementary School, James Irwin Charter School, and Howard Campus. These schools have demonstrated their unwavering support for military students through dedicated programs and initiatives designed to ease the transition for families moving into the area.

The Purple Star designation not only recognizes schools for their efforts but also emphasizes the importance of building a community that values the sacrifices made by military families. As more schools across the state and nation follow in the footsteps of these exemplary institutions, the impact on military students will undoubtedly be profound, helping them thrive both academically and personally in what can often be a challenging and uncertain environment.
