Colorado Avalanche Threat Heightens Amid Snowstorm

Pueblo, CO — A powerful snowstorm that swept through Colorado’s high country over the weekend triggered multiple avalanches, causing significant disruptions to travel and posing ongoing risks to mountain areas.

On Monday morning, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center captured a natural avalanche on camera in Ten Mile Canyon, located between Frisco and Copper Mountain. The avalanche, which occurred around 9 a.m., was caught on video by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and while it did not reach the roadway, authorities have warned that the danger of additional slides remains high.

The Ten Mile Canyon avalanche comes just days after a separate incident on Loveland Pass, where a powerful avalanche sent a vehicle nearly 50 meters off U.S. 6. This incident led to the closure of the road for several days, further exacerbating the challenges for travelers in the region.

As snow continues to fall throughout the area on Monday and Tuesday, avalanche warnings remain in effect across Colorado’s mountainous regions. CDOT officials reported that Interstate 70, a major east-west corridor, has been plagued with numerous closures due to poor visibility and crashes, including one involving eight vehicles.

The avalanche risk prompted CDOT to announce a planned closure of Interstate 70 near Vail on Tuesday morning to allow crews to conduct avalanche mitigation efforts. The closure will affect both directions of the highway.

The Pinpoint Weather team continues to track additional snowstorms that are expected to create further travel disruptions. With winter storm conditions expected to persist, the situation remains fluid, and residents and travelers are urged to stay informed about road conditions and avalanche risks.

As Colorado grapples with these extreme weather conditions, authorities are stressing the importance of safety and preparation, especially for those in or traveling through the high country.
