Colorado Springs, Colo. — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has unveiled plans for a new temple in Colorado Springs, marking a significant milestone for the area’s growing Latter-day Saint community. The announcement was made public following remarks by President Russell M. Nelson during the Church’s October 2023 General Conference.
The new temple will be located on an 18.6-acre site at the intersection of Flying Horse Club Drive and Barossa Valley Road, in the northern part of the city. The proposed design features a single-story structure, spanning approximately 45,000 square feet. In addition to the temple itself, the development will also include a meetinghouse and a utility building.
“This temple will provide a place of peace and spiritual growth for thousands of Latter-day Saints in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas,” said President Nelson in his announcement. “The ordinances and covenants of the temple are of eternal significance, and we continue to build more temples to make these sacred possibilities a reality in each of your lives.”
The Colorado Springs temple will be the first of its kind in the city. While the Church already operates temples in Denver and Fort Collins, the new structure will significantly reduce travel times for the area’s Latter-day Saint population, many of whom have long made the journey to these other temples. Additionally, the Grand Junction Colorado Temple is currently under construction.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a sizable presence in Colorado, with nearly 150,000 members across 310 congregations. The new temple will serve as a hub of worship and community for members in the region, providing a sacred space for temple ordinances, which are central to the faith’s beliefs and practices.
Latter-day Saint temples are considered places of great reverence and are used for various religious ceremonies, including baptisms, marriages, and eternal family sealings. The Colorado Springs temple is expected to play a pivotal role in expanding access to these sacred rites for the area’s growing LDS community.
Construction timelines for the temple are still in the early stages, with further announcements expected as the project progresses. However, the announcement is already being met with excitement among local members, many of whom have eagerly awaited a temple in the city for years.
With the addition of the Colorado Springs temple, the LDS Church continues its global efforts to make temple worship more accessible to its members, underscoring the significance of these sacred buildings in the lives of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
