Ballot Counting Begins in Colorado Springs Special Election on Karman Line Annexation

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Ballot counting is officially underway in a closely watched special election that will determine whether a controversial development near Schriever Space Force Base becomes part of Colorado Springs.

The proposed project, known as the Karman Line, is at the center of the June 17 election. If approved by voters, the development would be annexed into city limits, a move that has sparked debate over urban growth, infrastructure demands, and future land use in the region.

On Thursday morning, election workers began counting ballots at the City Administration Building. According to the City Clerk’s Office, more than 300,000 ballots were mailed to registered voters for the special election. As of Thursday, over 30,000 ballots had been returned.

City Clerk Sarah Johnson acknowledged the challenge of holding a vote during the summer months but emphasized the importance of public participation.

“Whether we like it or not, there is an election on June 17th,” Johnson said. “We really need people to focus on voting and let us hear your opinion, and try to fit that in between vacations and wanting to be outside.”

The annexation proposal has drawn both support and criticism from local residents and officials. Proponents argue the development will bring economic growth and much-needed housing to the area, while opponents raise concerns about traffic, water use, and the long-term impact on city services.

The outcome of the vote is expected to shape the future of Colorado Springs’ southeastern edge, an area increasingly eyed for development as the city continues to grow.

Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on June 17 to be counted. Voters can return their ballots by mail or drop them off at official ballot drop-off locations throughout the city.
